Alan has a refined approach to realism in oil painting. His favorite subjects are the landscapes of his beloved Shenandoah Valley and family tree farm, Pinetop. He has a particular interest in landscapes that feature historic and other interesting structures.
Alan’s interest in painting was inspired by the late locally famous artist, John Chumley. Although Alan is largely self-taught he took a painting class from Bonnie Chumley, John Chumley’s daughter who is also a very accomplished artist.
Alan is a graduate from Old Dominion University in Norfolk where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering. He owns his own engineering firm, FHC Engineering. He lives in Winchester Virginia with his wife, Brenda, a doctor of nursing practice and professor at Shenandoah University. Brenda and Alan have four children, Katie, Solomon, Mary and Reagan. Katie is a registered nurse and works at the Winchester Medical Center. Solomon, is a doctor of pharmacy and currently a PhD student at University of Pittsburgh. Mary, a nursing student at Shenandoah University and Reagan is in the fourth grade.
